James Corbett, Ph.D., is being sued by 16 year old Chad Farnan, a young Christian student. The lawsuit says Corbett typically spent "a large portion of class time propagating his personal views to a captive audience." He railed against Christianity and Christian viewpoints on topics such as birth control, teenage sex, homosexuality and erectile dysfunction, according to the lawsuit. Corbett is a History teacher and a faculty adviser to the Free Thinking Atheist and Agnostic Kinship student club at Capistrano Valley High School in California.
Farnan began recording Corbett's lectures to supplement his note taking, however, he noticed the increasing anti-Christian rhetoric. He played the recordings for his mother who then contacted Advocates for Faith and Freedom.
Among the many statements that Corbett has made in class, this is one that has been fully cited in the lawsuit... “How do you get the peasants to oppose something that is in their best interest? Religion. You have to have something that is irrational to counter that rational approach. … [W]hen you put on your Jesus glasses, you can't see the truth.” Corbett was also recorded saying, “Conservatives don’t want women to avoid pregnancies – that’s interfering with God’s work” and “When you put on your Jesus glasses, you can’t see the truth.”
Imagine, if you will, that a public school history teacher taught Christian princples and values on a consistant basis. Further, imagine that the teacher made disparging remarks in order to support those Christian values. I am here to tell you that the ACLU and the media would be all over it. Isn't it ironic that Christians are now using the same ACLU tactics to go against the haters.
A Santa Ana, Ca. judge said there was plausible cause for the case to proceed despite Corbett's lawyer insisting that the case should be dismissed. The case should be hitting the court room in a couple months. The Right Wing Squadron will try to follow up on the case.
