Sparked by the controversy at Trinity United Church of Christ, it's parent organization, The United Church of Christ, says they want to open dialog about racial issues. The church's national leadership says the country's reaction over Jeremiah Wright's sermon demonstrated the complexity of racial issues in the country and the need for churches nationwide to talk about them.
"The members of Trinity United Church of Christ are going through a very difficult time right now. The intersection of politics, religion and race has heightened our awareness of how easy it is for conversations about race to be anything but sacred," said the Rev. John Thomas, the denomination's president.
Meanwhile, Wright's church, Trinity United Church of Christ, is asking for respect from the media. They say all the attention is disrupting their sevices. They have stepped up security.
Ok, so let me get this right... they teach racial intolerance and hatred of the United States and they want us to feel sorry for them and give them respect. Well, Christ has taught me to forgive people, however, He hasn't taught me to accept their ways. They have "social" sermons and have created an Afro-centric church environment. My Christian values tell me that a church should not be white, black, brown and any other color. It should be all about fellowship and sharing God's message. They have used the pulpit to spew their social and cultural agenda. I don't think they should be asking for respect. I think they should be showing respect.
