I just finished reading Michael Yon's book, "The Moment of Truth in Iraq". You really must put this on your MUST-READ list. As an embedded journalist without network affiliations, Yon gives eye witness accounts of events in Iraq without media bias. He is not a Green Zone writer. He gets a well rounded view of the war by both the top brass and also by going on patrols with the troops. During one of these patrols he actually gets caught in the middle of a gun battle and finds himself using a weapon himself.
Michael Yon is a former Green Beret so he is familiar with the military operations and, in particular, counterinsurgency. His book gives great insight on how well our troops employ counterinsurgency techniques and how they have gained the confidence of the Iraqi people to the point that they are helping to rid their neighborhoods of Al Qaeda and other terrorist networks.
The book is a real eye opener and is a great read for both conservatives and liberals. Yon does not take sides. In fact, the military denied him access to Iraq twice. He is a straight shooter. I believe that anyone who reads his book will understand why we cannot immediately pull out of Iraq and that conditions on the ground must be taken into account. Yes, we are winning the war in Iraq, however, he outlines why we need to ensure the Iraqi forces can handle security for their own country. According to Yon, the Iraqi Army is improving and need our continued commitment to complete their transformation into a competent fighting force.
The Right Wing Squadron HIGHLY recommends this book and we give it 5 stars.
