Several years ago John McCain warned us that Vladimir Putin, a 15 year veteran of the KGB, could not fully accept the fall of the former Soviet Union.  The Russians are just using South Ossentia as an excuse to punish Georgia for being a democracy that has ties to the United States.  We know this because there was no reason for them to push deep into Georgia.  Russia, in fact, had no business in South Ossentia.  They invaded the country just to support separatists who desire Georgia to become part of Russia.

McCain's response was tough and condemned Russia's actions.  He demanded a united Western front to protect Georgia.  He further stated that the United States should send immediate economic and humanitarian assitance to help mitigate the impact of the invasion.  He also had a stern message for the Russians saying, "Russian President Medvedev and Prime Minister Putin must understand the severe, long-term negative consequences that the government's actions will have for Russia's relationship with the U.S. and Europe."

McCain called for an emergency session of NATO's Executive Council and the U.N. Security Council.  He stated that NATO should hold talks on deploying a peacekeeping forrce.

The Repulican candidate called for an emergency meeting of G-7 foreign ministers to urge Russia to accept an immediate cease fire.  However, by the time McCain called for this action, G-7 had already made the request.

Obama, on the other hand, is vacationing here in my home state of Hawaii.  He also condemned the invasion, however, his response was a bit more touchy-feely.  He said, "We seek a future of cooperative engagement with the Russian government and friendship with the Russian people. We want Russia to play its rightful role as a great nation.

We can clearly see John McCain's experience.  He immediately knew which players should get involved and urged their action.  He was tough and made his feelings known with 100% certainty.

Obama, however, does not send a clear message.  What is Obama really saying?  He is telling them that he wants to play footsy with them and tell everyone they are a great nation.  He should realize that the United States is a great nation instead of telling the world how bad our country is like he did in Germany.  Maybe he should convince his pastor, Jeremiah Wright, that the United States is a great nation.  No, he would rather tell everyone that Russia is a great nation.
