Back in March I blogged D.C.'s unconstitutional handgun law (read here).  The law stood for 26 years.  However, the Supreme Court upheld an individual's right to own a handgun in D.C.

The liberal loons questioned the second amendment, "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."  The basic issue for the justices was whether the amendment protects an individual's right to own guns no matter what, or whether that right is somehow tied to service in a state militia.

Writing for the majority, Justice Antonin Scalia said that an individual right to bear arms is supported by "the historical narrative" both before and after the Second Amendment was adopted.

The Constitution does not permit "the absolute prohibition of handguns held and used for self-defense in the home," Scalia said. The court also struck down Washington's requirement that firearms be equipped with trigger locks or kept disassembled, but left intact the licensing of guns.

In a dissent he summarized from the bench, Justice John Paul Stevens wrote that the majority "would have us believe that over 200 years ago, the Framers made a choice to limit the tools available to elected officials wishing to regulate civilian uses of weapons."

He said such evidence "is nowhere to be found."

The Right Wing Squadron applauds this decision.

During Obama's tenure as a state legislature, he made it clear that he supported the anti-gun liberals.  He was asked point blank by the "Independent Voters of Illinois" if he supported a "ban [on] the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns" and he said "yes".  Of course, his campaign is denying that ever happened because he is trying to get the Pennsylvania votes.  Pennsylvania has the highest number of hunters of any state in the nation.

In 1998, an Illinois Legislative National Political Awareness Test reveal that Obama wanted to "ban the sale or transfer of all forms of semi-automatic weapons".  The majority of handguns are semi-automatic weapons.

On his website, however, he says he supports the Second Amendment and wants to protect gun rights.  What changed his mind?  Well, he is running for President and he wants votes even if he has to change his position to get them.  That's a big problem because it doesn't tell us what he really thinks.

He has fed the nation a bowl full of B.S. about how his beliefs are not aligned with Jeremiah Wright and now he wants us to eat his gun control pie.

Give me a break!  Mr. Slick, start speaking the truth!

D.C. passed a law in 1976 to prohibit private ownership of handguns, however, Dick Anthony Heller, a security guard is challenging the city's gun law saying that the ban should be overturned because it is too braod to comply with the Second Amendment.  D.C.'s argument is that handguns need to be banned because of sthe city's dangerous urban setting.  Their argument in their brief to the court basically says that banning handguns saves lives.  Heller's case is scheduled to be heard next week Tuesday.

Ok, so let's look at the numbers.  The ban on handguns went into effect in the District of Columbia in 1977.  However, every year since then, with the exception of 1985, the D.C. murder rate rose dramatically compared to other cities.  D.C.'s murder rate ranked first or second among 50 other large cities over a span of 15 years.  Over a period of 4 years, they ranked 4th.

Just as a comparison, Chicago's murder rate rose in the five years after implementing a similar ban.

Banning handguns just does not work.  If perps don't have guns, they will grab anything that can get the job done whether it be knife, a bat, a shovel, etc.  Hey, should we ban shovels?
